“As for man, his days are like grass…” Psalm 103:15a

THE BREVITY OF MAN’S EXISTENCE

Man’s life on earth is so ephemeral! How long does man last?

“As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
And its place remembers it no more.”
Psalm 103:15-16

1. The life span of man

a) It is described in terms of “days”.
b) And those days are compared to the life spans of:-
i) Grass
ii) The flowers of the field.
c) How long do they last?
i) Grass may last one summer.
ii) The flowers of the field may last for an even shorter period of time.

2. “The wind passes over it”

a) The reference to the wind.
i) It is a veiled reference to the changing of the seasons.
ii) The grass is soon cut down as fodder (hay) for animals.
b) The beautiful green grass.
i) The place remembers it no more.
ii) It is almost as if the grass never existed!

APPRECIATING THE MERCY OF GOD AFRESH

If man’s life is indeed so brief, then the mercies of God must be even more deeply appreciated. To be enslaved by sin is the worst possible way to live! Thank God that we have His abundant mercies to fall back on! Those who truly know the Lord and fear Him would turn to the Lord with great gratitude that there is forgiveness and redemption with Him.
