“When the peoples are gathered together…” Psalm 102:22a
WORSHIP IN ZION CONTEMPLATED
What kind of worship should Zion offer the Lord, in grateful recognition and in holy reverence of God?
“To declare the name of the LORD in Zion,
And His praise in Jerusalem,
When the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.”
Psalm 102:21-22
1. Elements of worship
a) To declare the name of the LORD.
i) Israel may indeed recite their Shema with great faith (Deuteronomy 6:4).
ii) Israel may also proclaim the name of the Lord (Exodus 34:5-7).
iii) The declaration of the name of God is a valid element of worship.
b) To declare His praise.
i) To speak of what He has done (preaching/ teaching).
ii) To testify of God’s goodness (personal testimony).
iii) The focus is to praise the name of the Lord.
c) To serve the Lord.
i) Worship in itself is to serve God.
ii) The act of serving can be a moving element in worship.
2. Who are the worshippers?
a) Zion/ Jerusalem is mentioned.
i) His servants
ii) His people
b) Kingdoms
This is a veiled prophetic statement anticipating the day when many kingdoms would come to know God and offer Him worship.
