Day 90 – Psalm 102

“You will arise and have mercy on Zion…” Psalm 102:13a

A SHIFT OF FOCUS NOTED

A shift of focus is noted in the following text. Instead of focusing on his misery, the psalmist shifts his attention on Zion.

“You will arise and have mercy on Zion;
For the time to favour her,
Yes, the set time, has come.
For Your servants take pleasure in her stones,
And show favour to her dust.”
Psalm 102:13-14

1. “Zion”

a) Zion is often used symbolically to refer to heaven.
b) In special contexts this word, Zion, is used to affectionately describe Jerusalem.
i) It is then used to include the holy city.
ii) The temple.
iii) The people who dwell there.
iv) The servants of God who serve Him in the temple.

2. “You will arise and have mercy on Zion”

a) Hope in God’s mercy is expressed here.
b) Hope that God would now arise and show mercy to His people in Zion.

3. “For the time to favour her, yes, the set time, has come”

a) This is expressive of hope and desire.
b) The psalmist did not know, indeed could not determine this for a fact!
c) He is hopeful that after so much suffering it was time for God to show mercy.

4. “Your servants”

a) They have shown faithfulness to God… being interested even in the stones in the city.
b) Indeed, the common street dust is looked upon affectionately by these faithful servants!
