"He who has begun a good work in you..."

Text: Philippians 1:6

A SPECIAL CAUSE FOR REJOICING

The apostle Paul was especially blessed with deep spiritual insight. As he thought about the ministry he developed in Philippi he saw a special work that God had begun to do in the hearts of the Philippians.

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has
begun a good work in you will complete it until the
day of Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 1:6

1. Paul’s work

a) To found the church in Philippi.
b) To preach the Gospel.
c) To build strong bonds of friendship and fellowship.
d) To develop the church.

2. God’s work

a) Paul was deeply appreciative of God’s work.
b) He had begun “a good work”
i) In the Church.
ii) In individual lives.

3. “Being confident of this very thing”

a) The grammar of the phrase “being confident” is very significant (perfective tense).
b) Paul speaks of being “deeply persuaded” that God had begun a good work in the hearts of many.
c) This conviction was right there at the beginning.
d) This persuasion had now become his confidence.
e) This work begun was not just his own personal work as an apostle, but God was his Co-worker doing a tremendous work in the heart.

4. “He who has begun… will complete it”

a) This is how God always works.
b) He commences and He will complete the work.

5. “Until the day of Jesus Christ”

a) The Return of the Lord Jesus was never far from Paul’s mind.
b) This was a strong consciousness in his heart and mind.
c) He looked forward to the Return of the Lord Jesus where God’s work would then be complete.
