"Making mention of you always in my prayers."

Text: Philemon 4

MINISTRIES OF THE APOSTLE PAUL

The Apostle Paul was deeply involved in a number of ministries. The following may be highlighted:-

1. Preaching of the Gospel

2. Making of disciples

3. Founding of churches

4. Defending the Gospel

5. Writing of meaningful letters (epistles)

6. Being an apostle to the Gentiles

7. Praying for churches and individuals

We have a clear example of his ministry in prayer in the following text.

“I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers.”

FEATURES OF PAUL’S PRAYERS

The following features may be highlighted:-

1. “I thank my God”

a) His prayers reflected a very personal relationship with God.
b) They were always full of thanksgiving.

2. “Making mention of you always”

a) Paul prayed for the churches he either founded or were closely associated.
b) He also made it a point to pray for individuals.
c) The word “always” is a wonderful feature that needs special mention.
i) Prayers were never sporadic.
ii) Praying for people was “natural” to Paul.

3. “In my prayers”

a) This would suggest that Paul had a regular prayer discipline.
b) The practice of prayer would have been instilled in him when he was growing up.
c) Prayer would have become even more a part of his daily routine as he learned to relate to the Spirit of God (Romans 8).
d) Paul was undoubtedly a man given to praying.
e) He must have prayed with a heart full of affection, understanding and deep faith.
