"But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance"

Text: Obadiah 17

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE MOUNT ZION

The remaining portion of Obadiah focuses on Mount Zion. This name was used symbolically. It has both geographical and eschatological significance as well.

“But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance,
And there shall be holiness;
The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.”
Obadiah 17

1. Edom’s thoughts about Judah

a) Edom despised the younger brother.
b) It had treated Jacob shabbily.
c) It added to Judah’s distress in the day of their calamity.

2. God’s plans for His people

a) He would not make a complete end to His people.
i) This promise was repeated a number of times (Jeremiah 5:10, 18; 30:11; 46:28)
ii) It is in this light this word is to be appreciated.
b) “On Mount Zion”
i) Reference to Jerusalem.
ii) Further reference to the nation of Israel.
iii) A reference to His people who are a part of Mount Zion.
c) “There shall be deliverance”
i) God Himself will provide deliverance.
ii) He will raise up special deliverers.
iii) His people need not fear obliteration.
d) “There shall be holiness”
i) This goes beyond the physical realm.
ii) God will look into the spiritual realm as well.
iii) He will create holiness.
e) “Jacob shall possess their possessions”
i) God had promised Jacob that his descendants would inherit His land.
ii) He would fulfil all that He had promised His people… including the physical realm.

What God has purposed, it will come to pass (Isaiah 14:24, 27)
