"As you have done, it shall be done to you"

Text: Obadiah 15

THE DAY OF RETRIBUTION

The Day of the Lord would be a day of retribution for Edom. This was made clear to them by Obadiah.

“For the day of the LORD upon all the nations is near;
As you have done, it shall be done to you;
Your reprisal shall return upon your own head.
For as you drank on My holy mountain,
So shall all the nations drink continually;
Yes, they shall drink, and swallow,
And they shall be as though they had never been.”
Obadiah 15-16

1. “The day of the LORD upon all the nations is near”

a) This particular declaration involved the following nations:
i) Egypt
ii) Judah
iii) Edom
b) The day of the Lord has several applications:
i) To describe the judgment of Israel (722 BC)
ii) To describe the judgment of Judah (585 BC)
iii) To describe the judgment of Edom (soon after)

2. How God’s judgment would be meted out

a) “As you have done, it shall be done to you”
i) The people of Edom will turn against each other.
ii) They will betray each other.
iii) They will be merciless to each other.
b) “Your reprisal shall return upon your own head”
i) Edom thought of their attack on Judah as a reprisal.
ii) The Babylonians would feel the same way when they attack and destroy Edom.

3. “As you drank on My holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually… And they shall be as though they had never been”

a) This could be a literal reference to drinking the good wines of Judah.
b) It could also be an idiomatic way of describing the looting of Judah as enjoying wine.
c) In the same way the nations that would attack Edom would enjoy destroying it totally. And Edom shall be as if it had never existed!
