"You should not have stood at the crossroads"

Text: Obadiah 14

THIRD SERIES OF “YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE”

The third series of “you should not have” was solemnly declared.

“You should not have stood at the crossroads
To cut off those among them who escaped;
Nor should you have delivered up those among them who remained
In the day of distress.”
Obadiah 14

1. “You should not have stood at the crossroads”

a) Roads
i) Roads must be well planned.
ii) Roads were made for armies to march easily from one place to another.
iii) It also made commerce and trade less difficult for merchants and customers.
b) “Crossroads”
i) They are junctions.
ii) They lead to different directions and places.
iii) They are also possible paths of escape from enemies.
c) The Edomites stood at crossroads.
i) They were there for all the wrong reasons.
ii) They should not have been there at all.

2. “To cut off those among them who escaped”

a) They were there to prevent the children of Judah who were trying to escape.
b) They were there to cut them off and to take advantage of their predicament.

3. “Nor should you have delivered up those among them who remained in the day of distress”

a) Some of the children of Judah did not try and escape by running away.
b) These remained in Jerusalem
i) In hiding.
ii) Seeking refuge wherever they can.
iii) In secret places.
c) The Edomites looked for them to deliver them up to the Babylonians.
d) They may have done this for rewards (like bounty hunters).
e) This was an un-called for deed by the Edomites.
