Failure to Comprehend Jesus

Text: John 10: 6-7

FAILURE TO COMPREHEND JESUS

Jesus did everything He could to teach the multitudes. Sadly, they were not able to comprehend Him.

“Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them. Then Jesus said to them again, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.’”

John 10:6-7

1. Jesus used this illustration

a. To help them understand that
i. He was the true Shepherd.
ii. He would lead His sheep.
iii. He would care for them.
iv. He would protect them.
v. He would relate to His sheep.
b. To invite them to consider being
i. His sheep.
ii. Relate to Him as their Shepherd.
iii. Follow Him as He leads them.

2. “But they did not understand the things which He spoke to them”

a. They did not know Jesus personally.
b. They did not have faith in Him.
c. They could not follow Him easily for they were not His sheep.

3. “Then Jesus said to them again”

a. “I am the door of the sheep.”
b. This was a very direct application of Himself as the Shepherd.

4. The imagery of a “door”

a. Sometimes a shepherd has to lead the sheep in the fields.
b. In the evening the shepherd would lead his sheep into a cave for the night for protection.
c. He would be the door at the mouth of the cave to ensure the safety of the sheep.
d. This is a beautiful description of Jesus as the good and loving Shepherd.

iii.
iii.
