Different Types of Sheepfold

Text: John 10: 2

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHEEPFOLD

There were two main types of sheepfolds that existed in the days of Jesus.

1. The open fields – Luke 2 (The shepherds in the Christmas story)

a. The sheep would be led to feed on open tracts of land.
b. Shepherds would have to be committed to caring for their flock.

2. The city public sheepfold – John 10:1

a. These enclosures allowed shepherds to house their sheep safely for a night or two.
b. The shepherds could be leading their flocks from one pasture to another.
c. These enclosures had walls to protect the sheep from being stolen.
d. The only way in was through the door (the entrance).

3. Only in modern times were sheep corralled in large fields

a. These did not exist in the days of Jesus.
b. Shepherds had to be on the move all the time, looking out for green pastures.

THE TRUE SHEPHERD

The thief or the robber would never use the main entrance, the door. He would be spotted immediately by the guardian of the public sheepfold.

The true shepherd would boldly walk to the person-in-charge and he would ask for the release of the sheep back into his loving care.

“But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.”

John 10:2

1. A contrast was highlighted

a. The thief or the robber (John 10:1)
b. The true shepherd (John 10:2)

2. The normal way in for the true shepherd

a. He would of course enter by the main door.
b. The public sheepfold owner would know the shepherd personally.
c. He would be recognized as the true shepherd of the sheep.

3. The thief or the robber

a. He would attempt to climb over the wall to get into the sheepfold.
b. He would never attempt going through the door of the public sheepfold.
