The Facts as they Presented Themselves

Text: John 9: 18-19

THE FACTS AS THEY PRESENTED THEMSELVES

The hard-headed Pharisees had great difficulty in accepting the facts as they presented themselves.

1. A man born blind had been gloriously healed.

2. The Person who performed this miracle was Jesus.

PREFERRING THEIR OWN OPINIONS

The Pharisees had their own preferred opinions about things. They interpreted all things on the basis of their fixed opinions, even if the facts were contrary to their opinions.

1. They did not like Jesus.

2. They believed that He was a Sabbath breaker and a sinner.

3. He was to be opposed and resisted strenuously.

TURNING TO THE PARENTS OF THE FORMER BLIND MAN

The Pharisees had made up their minds concerning Jesus. They refused the different opinions of their fellow-Pharisees. They also rejected the opinion of the former blind man. They turned to his parents next.

“But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. And they asked them, saying, ‘Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?’”

John 9:18-19

1. The Jews did not believe concerning the former blind man

a) That he was born blind.
b) That he had received his sight (because he was never blind).

2. “They called the parents of him who had received his sight”

a) “Is this your son?”
b) “Who you say was born blind”.
c) “How then does he now see?”

UNDERSTANDING WHAT THIS GROUP OF PHARISEES WAS DOING

The following things may be noted:

1. They were out to prove that no miracle had taken place.

a) If the man had not been born blind.
b) Then he could not claim that he was healed.

2. This approach was ridiculous.

Why would anyone pretend to be blind for all his life? What would be the point for the parents or the man to pretend blindness since birth?
