A Sobering Deceleration
Text: John 8: 43-44
A SOBERING DECLARATION
The debate had gone on long enough. He had to make a solemn declaration to the Jews!
“Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.”
John 8:43-44
1. “Why do you not understand My speech”
a. This was an astute observation.
b. The Jews showed no comprehension of what Jesus had spoken.
2. A reason highlighted
a. Because they were not able to listen to His word.
b. Not able?
i. They were not willing to listen.
ii. They chose to reject instead.
iii. They had closed their hearts to what Jesus taught.
3. “You are of your father the devil”
a. This was the stark reality.
b. Despite their claim of Abraham as their father.
c. Despite their claim of God as their Father.
d. The bald facts would indicate that they were of the devil!
4. Three things stand out concerning the devil
a. He was a murderer right from the beginning.
i. He caused Cain to kill his brother Abel. (Genesis 4, 1 John 3:12)
ii. He has always been murderous.
b. He does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.
i. He rejects truth.
ii. There is no truth in him at all.
c. He would cause his children to fulfil his desires (rejection of Jesus and seeking His death).
