A Deep and Profound Answer
Text: John 7: 6-9
A DEEP AND PROFOUND ANSWER
Graciously, Jesus listened to what His brothers said to Him. His answer was deep and profound.
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil. You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.’ When He said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.”
John 7:6-9
1. Understanding “Time”
a. Our understanding of “Time”.
i. Limited to human understanding.
ii. Time is understood in terms of “history”.
iii. It is limited to human existence.
iv. We often measure “time” in terms of how long a person lives.
b. Jesus introduced a different way of looking at “Time”.
i. He said that His time had not yet come.
ii. His “Time” had a slightly different nuance.
iii. He was making a reference to God’s “time”.
iv. His life and His moments were ordered by God’s will and His timing.
2. Going to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles
a. The brothers of Jesus
i. They can go at any time they wished.
ii. Their “time” was not ordered in the same way.
b. The movements of Jesus
i. God’s time had to be discerned.
ii. Jesus had to wait for His Father to tell Him when to go to Jerusalem.
3. The world (Jesus was speaking about His enemies) hated Jesus
Thus, He must exercise much wisdom and caution with reference to His movements. This was a profound teaching that needs to be carefully understood. Jesus was seeking to explain why He was not going to Jerusalem simply because His brothers sought to push Him.
