The Puzzled Jews
Text: John 7: 35-36
THE PUZZLED JEWS
The Jewish rulers did not understand what Jesus said and meant. They murmured among themselves over what Jesus had said.
“Then the Jews said among themselves, ‘Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come?’’”
John 7:35-36
1. “Then the Jews said among themselves”
a. The discussion was among themselves.
b. The Pharisees and the chief priests.
2. The issue discussed was what Jesus had said to them
a. “You will seek Me and not find Me.”
b. “Where I am you cannot come.”
3. The tentative answers they came up with
a. Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him?
i. They thought about what Jesus said.
ii. They tried to understand what He meant.
iii. They thought about His “intention”.
iv. They had not understood Jesus at all.
v. Jesus did not speak about His intention at all.
vi. He was making an obvious and factual statement!
The Jews did not truly know God at all and thus they could not understand Jesus much.
b. “Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks”
i. The Jews were referring to Jews who were not living in Israel.
ii. These were called the Dispersion (overseas Jews).
iii. The Dispersion Jews did not speak much Hebrew if at all.
iv. They spoke mainly or only Greek.
v. The Jews despised the Dispersion Jews who spoke Greek as their main language.
By making this statement, they were scorning and despising Jesus for His “intention!”
