Division Among the People
Text: John 7: 30-31
DIVISION AMONG THE PEOPLE
The people had mixed responses as they listened to Jesus. Their hearts seem deeply conflicted.
“Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. And many of the people believed in Him, and said, ‘When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?’”
John 7:30-31
1. “Therefore they sought to take Him”
a. This was one of the groups that responded.
b. This would be “The Jews”.
i. The rulers.
ii. The Jewish authorities who had stood in opposition all this time.
c. They sought to arrest Him.
i. To silence Him.
ii. To stop His influence on the multitude.
iii. They were even more determined to kill Him.
iv. They could not deny nor defeat His arguments.
2. “But no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.”
a. There was Divine Power to reckon with.
b. God had a time-line that could not be thwarted.
c. The hour of His death had not yet come.
d. Thus, they could not capture Jesus.
3. “And many of the people believed in Him”
a. These had listened carefully.
b. They seemed convinced that Jesus was to be believed in as the Messiah.
4. But there were still some doubts
a. They had seen the many “signs” that Jesus had performed.
These were powerful miracles that no one could easily duplicate.
b. They were certainly open to the great possibility that Jesus could be the Messiah.
They wondered if “The Messiah” that the Jews had said has not yet come would be able to perform more signs than Jesus!
