A Direct Reference to the Twelve Disciples
Text: John 6: 64-65
A DIRECT REFERENCE TO THE TWELVE DISCIPLES
Jesus knew the hearts of all who followed Him. He knew who truly believed in Him and who did not.
“‘But there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. And He said, ‘Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.’”
John 6:64-65
1. This statement was made to His Twelve disciples
a) This reflects the fact that Jesus knew the hearts of all who came to Him.
b) He was making a reference to Judas Iscariot.
i) He knew that deep down, Judas did not really believe.
ii) He would one day end up betraying Jesus to the Jewish authorities.
2. Recalling what had been taught earlier
a) There was a special work of the Father.
b) No one can truly come to Jesus unless the Father Himself has granted it.
c) Jesus held fast to this truth.
WHY THEN DID JESUS HAVE JUDAS AS ONE OF HIS DISCIPLES?
If Jesus knew who would betray Him, why then would He allow Judas to follow Him as a disciple? The following thoughts may be considered:
1. The compassion of Jesus
a) He would not turn anyone away.
b) He would continue to give the following:
i) His hand of friendship.
ii) He would offer fellowship.
iii) He would exercise grace and mercy.
2. The fulfilment of Scripture
a) The Scriptures predicted that one of His own would betray Him.
b) Psalm 41:9 described a ‘familiar friend” who would turn out to be a betrayer.
i) This was a veiled prophetic word.
ii) Jesus would see this prophetic word fulfilled when Judas betrayed Him.
