The Multitudes Followed Jesus

Text: John 6:22-24

THE MULTITUDES FOLLOWED JESUS

What happened to the multitudes? They had lost sight of Jesus when He went up the mountain. John continued with his story.

“On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—However, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.”

John 6:22-24

1. “The following day”

a. The people realised that the only boat there was gone!
b. They noted that the disciples of Jesus had gone into the boat by themselves.
c. Jesus had not gone with His disciples.

2. “Other boats came from Tiberias”

a. Tiberias was a major city.
b. Capernaum was a city several miles away from Tiberias.
c. There were other boats plying these routes.
d. The multitudes decided that they would take the boats from Tiberias to search for Jesus.

3. “The people…came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus”

a. The multitudes had been observant.
i. They noted that Jesus was not with His disciples.
ii. The disciples had taken their boat and rowed over to Capernaum.
b. Their intent
i. To force Jesus to be their king.
ii. They were searching for Jesus not because they were interested in following His teachings.
c. They found boats that would take them to Capernaum.
i. Perhaps not all were able to follow Jesus by boat.
ii. But a sizeable number must have taken the trouble to search for Jesus.
iii. Their zeal was commendable; but their understanding and intent were wrong.

众人跟随耶稣
