The Witness of John
Text: John 5:36
THE WITNESS OF JOHN
The witness of John should have been sufficient. The following reasons may be presented:
1. His character
a. His life was impressive.
b. His life was consistent.
2. His ministry
a. He had faithfully preached.
b. Many had come to faith through his preaching.
THE WORKS OF JESUS AS ANOTHER WITNESS
Jesus knew the hearts of the people. Their interest in John was short-lived. He went on to present another witness.
“But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish- the very works that I do- bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.”
John 5:36
1. “I have a greater witness than John’s.”
a. Jesus was referring to the works that the Father had given Him to do and to finish.
b. What were these works that bore witness that God the Father had sent Him?
2. The Gospel of Luke records an important word by the Lord Jesus Christ.
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed
Me To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”Luke 4:18-19
a. These were the works that God had sent Jesus to do.
b. Jesus had faithfully fulfilled all these works.
3. The special sign-miracles Jesus performed were undeniable works that an ordinary person cannot do.
a. The blind see (Matthew 11:5a).
b. The lame walk (Matthew 11:5a).
c. The lepers are cleansed (Matthew 11:5b).
d. The deaf hear, the dead are raised up (Matthew 11:5b, 5c).
These were the works that bore witness powerfully that Jesus was truly the Messiah, the Anointed One!

约翰的见证
约翰的见证本应该足够了。以下是其中的原因：

“主的灵在我身上，因为他用膏膏我，叫我传福音给贫穷的人，差遣我报告被掳的得释放、瞎眼的得看见，叫那受压制的得自由，报告神悦纳人的禧年。”
