Bearing Witness Fruitfully
Text: John 4:39-42
BEARING WITNESS FRUITFULLY
The Samaritan woman had done her part well in bearing witness for the Lord. Jesus had been right to anticipate the arrival of the Samaritans. There was going to be a rich harvest of souls.
ONE GROUP OF SAMARITANS
There was a group of Samaritans who came to faith because of the testimony of the Samaritan woman.
“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all that I ever did.’” John 4:39
1. Many of the Samaritans believed in Him
a. Samaritans and Jews did not get along well at all.
b. But “many of the Samaritans believed” in Jesus as the Messiah.
c. And the reason why they would even consider hearing Jesus was because of her testimony.
d. Her testimony was a simple but profound one- “He told me all that I ever did.”
e. Jesus displayed powerfully moving characteristics:
i. He had Divine power to know so much about the Samaritan woman without being informed.
ii. He showed Divine mercy for He had not condemned her.
iii. He showed Divine grace by offering her the gift of living water that leads to everlasting life.
f. Who but the True Messiah could do all of the above?
2. An invitation extended
a).The Samaritans had invited Jesus to visit their city (John 4:40).
b. Jesus graciously accepted their invitation.
c. He stayed in the Samaritan city for two days.
d. This was almost unheard of- that a famous Jewish Rabbi would stay in a Samaritan city!
3. Many more believed
a. As the Samaritans listened to the teachings of Jesus their hearts must have been deeply moved.
b. They too came to faith in Jesus and were granted everlasting life.
c. They had heard the word of salvation from Jesus Himself.
d. They too were convinced that Jesus was indeed the Messiah.
4. Their word to the Samaritan woman
“Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” John 4:42
The ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ was indeed highly successful in Samaria and it all began with one individual!
