An Important Perspective Taught
Text: John 4:35-38
AN IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVE TAUGHT
The Lord Jesus had to broaden the perspective of His Disciples with reference to spiritual ministry.
1. A common understanding
a. The common saying: “There are still four months and then comes the harvest?”
b. What does this common saying mean?
i. There was still plenty of time.
ii. The harvest was four months away.
iii. There is no need to feel a sense of urgency with reference to working hard at the present.
2. The perspective of Jesus
a. Jesus did not hold to this common understanding.
b. He offered a different and new perspective.
i. “Behold, I say to you…”
ii. The common human perspective needs to be changed.
iii. Spiritual eyes must be opened.
iv. There is a spiritual harvest waiting for hard-working labourers.
c. A white harvest field
i. When the harvest is ready it is described as “Already white for harvest” (John 4:35).
ii. The harvest field Jesus was referring to was the ministry to the Samaritans.
iii. It had been a largely neglected field of work.
3. Expansion of the harvest field analogy
a. There were sowers in the past.
b. There must be reapers in the present.
c. The reapers must gather fruit for eternal life.
d. Both sower and reaper may rejoice greatly together.
4. Sending the Disciples
a. The Disciples must be prepared to be sent by the Lord Jesus (John 4:38).
b. They had not laboured as sowers of the seed.
c. But they may now enjoy the work of reaping the harvest among the Samaritans (John 4:38).
