Reaching The Tomb
Text: John 20: 6 - 8
REACHING THE TOMB
Peter reached the garden tomb shortly after John. Typical of Peter, he went straight into the tomb.
“Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.”
John 20:6-8
1. “Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloth lying there”
a. Peter was now on the scene.
b. He went into the tomb immediately.
c. He saw the linen cloths lying there.
d. But the body of Jesus was not there.
2. “And the handkerchief that had been around His head not lying there with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself”
a. The handkerchief is reference to the cloth that was used to wrap the head of Jesus.
b. It lay separately from the linen cloths.
c. It was folded in a place by itself.
d. But the body of Jesus was not there.
3. “Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also”
a. John followed the lead of Peter.
b. He went into the tomb also.
c. He saw the same things Peter did.
d. But there was no sign of the Lord Jesus in the empty tomb.
4. “And he saw and believed”
a. He now saw things differently.
b. The first time he saw the linen cloths, he did not fully comprehend what he saw.
c. But this time round, he saw clearly with faith.
d. He believed even as he saw again.
e. This time round, his faith was confirmed.
