Agreeing To The Request Of The Jews
Text: John 19: 32 -33
AGREEING TO THE REQUEST OF THE JEWS
The request of the Jews was heard by Pilate. He agreed to have the legs of prisoners broken to hasten death so that their bodies may not remain on their crosses over the Sabbath.
“Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.”
John 19:32-33
1. “The soldiers”
a. These were the Romans soldiers.
b. They were trained for battle.
c. They were also trained to execute prisoners.
i. They knew how to crucify prisoners.
ii. They knew how to break legs to hasten death.
2. “And broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him”
a. These were prisoners who were crucified.
b. They were on the left and right side of Jesus.
c. They were still alive.
d. Their legs were broken by these trained executioners.
3. “But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead”
a. Jesus had already died.
i. He had committed His Spirit to the Father (Luke 23:46).
ii. He gave up His Spirit (John 19:30).
b. The body of Jesus was on the cross but His Spirit had been yielded to the Father.
c. The soldiers understood this.
i. They had seen many people crucified.
ii. They would know if the prisoner had really died.
4. “They did not break His legs”
a. There was no need to do that
b. That Jesus was already dead was certain to these trained executioners.
c. Thus, it was noted that the soldiers did not break the legs of Jesus.
