The Request To Change The Title

Text: John 19: 21 - 22

THE REQUEST TO CHANGE THE TITLE

The chief priests were upset with the title that Pilate had written. They requested him to alter the wording.

Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, ‘Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews.’ but, ‘He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’’’ Pilate answered, ‘What I have written, I have written.’”

John 19:21-22

1. “Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate”

a. They were able to have an audience with Pilate.
b. They made a request to him.

2. “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’”

a. This could be read both ways:
i. Negatively
ii. Positively
b. The chief priests did not like the wording.

3. “But, He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews’”

a. This would be totally negative.
b. There would be less possibility of misreading it:
i. The focus would be on the claim of Jesus that He was King.
ii. It could be read as a fraudulent claim.
iii. It could be read as a foolish and boastful claim of kingship.

4. “Pilate answered”

a. He knew that this title riled the Jews.
b. If that riled them, then all the more he would not change the title he had written.

5. “What I have written, I have written”

a. Pilate refused to budge.
b. The Jews could not threaten him on this matter.
c. He would have the last word.
d. He refused to give in to this request of the chief priests.
e. It was his right as the governor of Rome to write the title as he saw fit.

i. 负面
ii.正面

iii.
