The Response Of Jesus To Pilate

Text: John 18: 34 - 35

THE RESPONSE OF JESUS TO PILATE

Jesus sought to engage Pilate in His reply to the governor. This was well within Roman law.

“Jesus answered him, ‘Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?’ Pilate answered, ‘Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?’”

John 18:34-35

1. The query of Jesus

a. “Are you speaking for yourself about this”
i. This would be a valid line of questioning.
ii. Pilate would be exercising his right as governor to examine Jesus thoroughly.
b. “Or did others tell you this concerning Me”
i. If Pilate had merely been informed then this approach would be prejudiced.
ii. The Jews had already decided that Jesus be given the death penalty.
iii. This was a decision that had already been determined without due process.

2. Pilate’s response

a. “Am I a Jew”
i. Pilate showed irritation.
ii. He was not a Jew and did not understand why he was being coerced to pass judgment.
b. “Your own nation and the chief priests”
i. The Sanhedrin Council represented the whole nation of Israel.
ii. The chief priests were the spiritual leaders of the nation.
c. “Have delivered You to me”
i. They had pushed Jesus to be tried under Roman Law for capital punishment.
ii. This “deliverance” was unusual.
iii. In normal circumstances, the Council would have asked for leniency for any Jew being tried by Roman law.
d. “What have You done”
i. Obviously, Pilate was not very familiar with the ministry of Jesus.
ii. He wanted to know how Jesus offended the Sanhedrin Council so badly they wanted His death.

iii.

iii.
