Suffering Physical Pain
Text: John 18: 22- 23
SUFFERING PHYSICAL PAIN
The interrogation that Jesus had to endure was filled with tension. This was not a legal trial at all. This interrogation took place late at night in the home of Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas.
“And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, ‘Do You answer the high priest like that?’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?’”
John 18:22-23
1. An officer of the temple guards
a. He heard what Jesus said to Annas.
b. He became angry.
c. He struck Jesus with his hand (a hard and painful slap on the face).
i. This was uncalled for.
ii. This was intended intimidation.
iii. This was illegal.
iv. This was wicked and vicious.
2. The quiet response of Jesus
a. His response was remarkable.
b. It was a stark contrast.
c. Evaluation: If Jesus had done that which was wrong
i. If Jesus had spoken that which was wrong (“evil”),
ii. All may bear witness.
iii. They can use the words of Jesus when He is tried before the Sanhedrin Council.
iv. This would be appropriate.
d. Questioning why He was struck
i. Jesus had every right to raise this question.
ii. He had not been proven wrong in His answer to Annas.
iii. Why then was He struck? The slapping of Jesus was totally out of order.
iv. To strike Jesus in this brutal way was nothing less than sinful.
