Entering The Garden Of Gethsemane
Text: John 18: 1 -2
ENTERING THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE
The prayer that Jesus offered took place before He entered into the Garden of Gethsemane. This Garden was a favourite place of Jesus.
“When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.”
John 18:1-2
1. “When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron”
a. John 17 is the record of a prayer Jesus made.
b. He prayed alone.
c. He then crossed the Brook Kidron with His Disciples.
2. “Where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered”
a. “A garden”
i. There were many public gardens in the ancient world.
ii. These gardens were for the public to enjoy.
iii. Not many people were able to have their own gardens.
b. “He and His Disciples entered”
i. Jesus would enter into another season of prayer.
ii. This prayer was carefully noted by other gospel writers (Matthew 26:36-46).
3. “And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples”
a. Judas was one of the Twelve Disciples Jesus chose to be with Him.
b. He was now clearly described as the one “who betrayed Him”.
c. “Also knew the place”
i. Jesus had frequented the place.
ii. Judas had also been there with the Lord.
iii. He used his knowledge wrongly.
d. “For Jesus often met there with His Disciples”
i. This area was near Jerusalem.
ii. When Jesus ministered in Jerusalem, He would probably go to Gethsemane Garden.
