Prayer For The Disciples
Text: John 17: 9 - 10
PRAYER FOR THE DISCIPLES
Jesus made a careful distinction between His Disciples and the world that had rejected Him.
“I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.”
John 17:9-10
1. “I pray for them”
a. Jesus was referring to His Disciples.
b. He prayed for them because:
i. He loved them.
ii. They needed prayer support.
2. “I do not pray for the world”
a. The world had already rejected Jesus.
b. His prayer for them would not help them for they refused to believe in Jesus.
3. “But for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours”
a. Jesus was very conscious of the fact that God gave Him Disciples.
b. They were first and foremost God’s own.
c. They had been entrusted to Jesus.
d. Therefore, Jesus prayed for them.
4. “And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine”
a. There was such a special sense of:
i. Closeness
ii. Oneness
b. This was the special sense of identification Jesus had with His Father.
5. “And I am glorified in them”
a. The glory of Jesus was to be found in the Father.
b. His glory was also to be found in His Disciples.
i. In that they were identified with Him.
ii. In that they had learned how to keep His Word and to abide in Him in love.
