Text: John 16: 21 - 22
A TENDER ILLUSTRATION
Jesus selected a tender illustration to help the Disciples to cope with their sense of sorrow.
“A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.”
John 16:21-22
1. “A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow because her hour has come”
a. Labour pains have been described as one of the worst experiences ever.
b. Jesus compares the sorrow felt by the Disciples to the sorrow felt by a woman in labour.
c. It is difficult to get out of this fixation of pain and sorrow.
2. “But as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish”
a. The sorrow and pain have eased.
b. She remembers the pain no more after the baby is born.
3. “For joy that a human being has been born into the world”
a. This is indescribable joy.
b. It is a joy that eclipses the highest level of pain.
4. “Therefore you now have sorrow”
a. Jesus understood the depth of the sorrow of the Disciples.
b. It was a sorrow that did not seem to go away.
i. Explanations did not help.
ii. Words of comfort did not seem to help either.
iii. Words of assurance did not go very far.
5. “But I will see you again”
a. Jesus gave this strong word of promise.
b. He will rise from the dead and He will see them again.
6. “And your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you”
a. Like the woman who has given birth, the Disciples would find joy again.
b. It would be a joy that no one could ever take from them!
