Putting Into Practice
Text: John 15: 12-13
PUTTING INTO PRACTICE
The reality of an abiding faith in Jesus is best seen when faith is put into real-life practice.
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
John 15:12-13
1. “This is My commandment”
a. This is stated most clearly.
b. This is not a suggestion at all but a direct commandment.
2. “That you love one another as I have loved you”
a. The Disciples were specially commanded to learn how to love each other.
b. They had not learned how to do this effectively.
i. There was petty jealousy among the Disciples.
ii. They argued among themselves who was greater.
c. The commandment was clear.
i. They had seen how Jesus had loved them.
ii. They were now commanded to love one another in the same manner.
3. “Greater love has no one than this”
a. How does one measure great love?
b. The answer from Jesus was this:
i. He loved the world.
ii. He had certainly proven that He had loved His Disciples dearly.
iii. They were commanded to emulate His example of love.
4. “Than to lay down one’s life for his friends”
a. Jesus was going to lay down His life for the world.
b. The greatest expression of love would be to lay down one’s life for friends.
c. Jesus was commanding them to follow His example of demonstrating genuine love of the best kind.
d. It would take deep abiding in Jesus, His word, and His love to be able to fulfil this commandment.
e. Let us be challenged to truly abide in the Lord so that we might be able to keep this word.
