A Deeper Faith Needed
Text: John 14: 10
A DEEPER FAITH NEEDED
The Disciples of Jesus struggled with faith in the Lord Jesus. They had seen Jesus perform mighty miracles. They had heard Him teach. But somehow, they still struggled with their faith in Him.
“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, And the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak On My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me Does the works.”
John 14:10
1. The danger of a shallow faith
a. There is weakness
b. There are doubts
c. There is a lack of comprehension
d. There is confusion
The above problems seem to have hit the Disciples of Jesus. Thomas and Philip seemed to struggle with their faith in Jesus.
2. “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me?”
a. There may have been a basic genuine faith in Jesus
b. But that faith had not grown deeper
c. Hence there was difficulty in understanding the relationship between Jesus and His Father
3. Another attempt to cultivate a deeper faith
Three things were singled out for deeper comprehension. A deeper understanding will help in the cultivation of a deeper faith.
a. Indwelling
i. The Father dwelt in Jesus
ii. Conversely Jesus dwelt in the Father
b. The words of Jesus (actual spoken words)
i. There is obvious authority
ii. But this authority is to be traced to the Father
c. The works of Jesus
i. On the surface, Jesus performed mighty works
ii. But in truth, it was the Father who was at work in and through Jesus
A greater knowledge and understanding will lead to a deeper faith. The person who has depth of faith will be able to understand that if he knows Jesus, he also knows the Father and has seen Him.
