Knowledge of Jesus
Text: John 14: 7-8
KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS
Many have wondered what God is like. The Disciples were so privileged to have met Jesus in their lifetime. But they did not seem to have understood fully the significance of knowing Jesus.
“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; And from now on you know Him and have seen Him. Philip said to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.’”
John 14:7-8
1. “If you had known Me”
a. Had the Disciples really understood who Jesus was?
b. On the surface Jesus was the following:
i. Teacher
ii. Healer
iii. Prophet
iv. Master/ Lord
c. There was more to Jesus than the above features
2. “You would have known My Father also”
a. To know Jesus was truly to know God the Father
b. He fully reflected His Father
i. In knowledge and wisdom
ii. In character and power
iii. In grace and mercy
3. “And from now on you know Him”
a. It was more than possible to know and understand God
b. To know Jesus is the same as knowing God
4. “And have seen Him”
a. Not in the physical sense of the word
b. But the essential Being that God is, Jesus had displayed clearly
5. Philip: “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient”
a. Philip had not comprehended what Jesus had taught
b. He asked if Jesus could “show” or “manifest” God in the physical sense. That it would be sufficient.
