A Deep and Meaningful Prayer

Text: John 11: 41-42

A DEEP AND MEANINGFUL PRAYER

Martha must have consented and friends were asked to move the stone away from the tomb, though all must have been wondering what Jesus was going to do next.

“Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, ‘Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.’”

John 11:41-42

1. “Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying”

a. This was a factual description of what took place.
b. Lazarus was that dead man; this was the place, the tomb in which he was interred.

2. “And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said”

a. Jesus looked up to Heaven.
b. This an important symbolic act that all who were there could take notice.
c. Jesus prayed to His Father, the God of heaven and earth.

3. “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me”

a. “Father” was the favourite term Jesus used when speaking about God.
b. Or when He offered up prayers to Him.
c. There was such a precious and wonderful relationship between Father and Son.
d. Nothing was taken for granted though; there was thanksgiving that God had heard.
e. The Father would always listen to His Son in His prayers.

4. “But because of the people who are standing by I said this”

a. Everyone standing by was watching Jesus.
b. They had also heard what He had said.

5. “That they may believe that You sent Me”

a. There was so much unbelief.
b. The desire of Jesus was that people may believe in God.
c. And that they may believe that the Father had indeed sent Jesus into the world.
d. They must know that the Father would hear and respond to the prayers of Jesus.
In this instance, it would mean that the Father would raise the dead through Jesus.
