My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
我夜间的歌曲《路加福音》
Text: Luke 7: 1-10
CAPERNAUM
1. The Lord Jesus had ministered in Capernaum before
a. He had taught at the local synagogue.
b. He had also cast out a demon at the synagogue (Luke 4:31-37).
c. This was a little city that traded in fish, because of its proximity with the Sea of Galilee.
2. There were many Gentiles in the city
a. One of them was a Roman Centurion.
b. He was greatly respected by the people of Capernaum.
c. The Centurion had a servant-lad who was seriously ill.
3. The elders of the Jews
a. They sought the help of the Lord Jesus on behalf of the Centurion.
b. They had these words to say about the Centurion.
i. He was “deserving” of help (Luke 7:4).
ii. “He loves our nation” (Luke 7:5a).
iii. He “has built us a synagogue” (Luke 7:5b).
4. The Lord proceeded to go to the house of the Centurion
a. The Centurion sent another set of friends to the Lord Jesus.
b. They were to say these words to the Lord:
i. “Lord, do not trouble Yourself. I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.” (Luke 7:6)
ii. “Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You.”
‘But say the word, and my servant will be healed.’” (Luke 7:7)
iii. He fully understood and believed in the authority that was the Lord’s. (Luke 7:8)
5. The Lord Jesus then addressed the crowd that followed Him
“I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” Luke 7:9
a. Faith was what the Lord Jesus had hoped to see in Israel.
b. He had taught great truths that should have inspired faith.
c. His many mighty miracles should have caused people to find faith.
d. And here, a Gentile, a Roman Centurion displayed greater faith than anyone else in Israel.
Needless to say, the servant of the Centurion was healed at that hour!
