My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)

Text: Luke 5: 4-7
CONCLUDING THE TEACHING SESSION
1. The Multitudes had come to the Lord Jesus
a. To hear Him teach about the Kingdom of God.
b. The Lord Jesus concluded His teaching (Luke 5:4).
c. The Multitudes would have to return to their homes.
2. What did the Lord Jesus teach?
a. He taught “the word of God” (Luke 5:1).
b. There are many lessons to learn.
c. The Lord often talked about the Kingdom of God (Luke 4:43).
SPEAKING TO SIMON PETER
1. The Lord Jesus spoke to Simon Peter.
2. His words must have been a surprise to Simon.
a. “Launch out into the deep” (Luke 5:4a..
b. “And let down your nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4b..
3. Why would this be a surprising word?
a. The Lord was not speaking about the Word of God at this time.
i. This may not have been expected.
ii. The Lord was speaking about catching fish.
b. The word given by the Lord was given to seasoned fishermen.
i. The Lord Jesus was not a fisherman.
ii. Seasoned fishermen do not take advice about fishing from non-fishermen.
4. Simon Peter’s response:
a. He was, of course, polite.
b. He called Him, “Master” (a polite word of address).
c. He explained to the Lord Jesus.
i. “We have toiled all night”
Fishing was commonly done in the night.
ii. “We have caught nothing” (Luke 5:5a)
The fishermen had returned empty-handed that day.
iii. The Lord Jesus was asking the fishermen to fish in the day!
d. Nevertheless, he would listen and obey.
i. “At Your word”
ii. “I will let down the net” (Luke 5:5b)
iii. Peter did not expect any fish to be caught!
AN AMAZING CATCH OF FISH
1. Peter and his friends did what the Lord told them.
a. They went out into the deep.
b. They let down their nets.
c. They caught so many fish, their nets were breaking (Luke 5:6).
2. Peter signalled for help from, his fishing partners.
a. They came to help.
b. They filled their boats with fish.
c. The catch was so great that their boats were sinking (Luke 5:7).
How could this be? How could this have happened?
