Text: Luke 4 :1-4

THE TEMPTATIONS OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The word “temptation”

a. It may simply mean “testing”.
b. It may indeed be called a “temptation”.
i. If one is encouraged to do wrong.
ii. It could lead to sin.

2. The Devil himself attempts to cause the Lord Jesus to do wrong

a. He chose three things to tempt the Lord Jesus with.
b. Many, if not all, would fall because of these temptations.
c. How did the Lord Jesus cope with these temptations?

THE FIRST TEMPTATION

1. The Devil cunningly chose when to tempt the Lord Jesus

a. The Lord Jesus had entered into a fast that lasted forty days and nights.
b. Naturally, He would be very hungry after the long fast.

2. The words of Temptation

a. “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread” (Luke 4:3).
b. The Devil was not expressing doubts that the Lord Jesus was the Son of God.
c. He was making the following suggestions:
i. He was the Son of God and obviously, He would have power.
ii. Why not use this power for Himself.
iii. He was hungry and He could easily turn a stone into bread.
d. He made it sound like it was a temptation.

THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The Lord Jesus saw through the words of Temptation.

2. What enabled Him to see through the Devil’s temptation?

a. The filling of the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22; 4:1).
i. The Spirit was with the Lord Jesus.
ii. He was in Him too.
iii. He filled His life.
b. The Word of God (Luke 4:4)
i. “It is written.”
This is a reference to the Scriptures.
ii. “Man shall not live by bread alone.”
One does not live to eat! Food is not everything, even if one is very hungry.
iii. “But by every word of God.”
The word of God did not teach the Lord Jesus to use His power for Himself. There is power from God but it was to be utilised to help people.

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To seek to be filled with Holy Spirit.

2. To read and understand God’s word and how it applies in our life.

3. To desire to obey the Lord and the Scriptures He has given us to read.

iii.

iii.
iii.
