THE POLITICAL SITUATION
“Herod, the king of Judea” Luke 1:5a
1. Israel was actually ruled by Rome, a world Empire then.
2. King Herod was appointed by Rome to be the king of Judea.
3. Herod’s authority came from Rome.
THE RELIGIOUS SCENE
“A certain priest” Luke 1:5b
1. Herod built a magnificent Temple for Israel
a. He hoped to gain the favour of the people.
b. Herod was an Idumean-Jew (Edomite and Jew).
2. Religion played a major role in the nation
a. Judaism was the national religion.
b. The Temple was a major part of their religious worship system
3. There was a strong priestly system in existence
a. The priests were grouped into “divisions”.
b. Zacharias was one of those priests.
c. His division was called “Abijah” (Luke 1:5c).
d. His wife was called “Elizabeth” (Luke 1:5d).
ZACHARIAS AND ELIZABETH
1. They were well-respected.
2. The following comments were made about them:
a. They were both righteous before God.
b. They were “walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless” (Luke 1:6).
c. Externally, they fulfilled all that may be expected of them.
d. Judaism had a very complex religious system.
e. Many of the requirements had to do with keeping religious rituals.
3. Family Life
a. They had no children.
b. Elizabeth was barren.
c. They were quite old. They were described candidly. They were “both well-advanced in years” (Luke 1:7).
