Text: Genesis 49: 5-7
MEDITATION
Genesis 49:5-7
5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place.
6 Let not my soul enter their council;
Let not my honour be united to their assembly;
For in their anger they slew a man,
And in their self-will they hamstrung an ox.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will divide them in Jacob
And scatter them in Israel.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Addressing Simeon and Levi
a. These were also sons from Leah.
b. But Jacob had scathing remarks about them.
2. Their character had similar traits
a. They were cruel.
b. They had a fierce anger.
c. They were self-willed.
They were the ones who organized the slaughter of the Shechemites (Genesis 34).
3. The curse pronounced by Jacob
a. He would not come close to them.
i. He would not stand in their council (plans).
ii. His honour (name. would not be associated with them.
b. This was a solemn and sad pronouncement.
i. If they did not repent and change, their character would plague them.
ii. These were powerful words that were deep and searching.
iii. Together, they were instruments of cruelty. Perhaps scattering them would prove redemptive for their own sake!
