MEDITATION
Genesis 49:3-4
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—
He went up to my couch.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Reuben, the firstborn
Associated with firstborn:
a. Might
b. Strength
c. Dignity
d. Excellency of power
2. Unfortunately, Reuben possessed none of the above.
3. The character of Reuben
a. He was unstable as water.
b. His character would affect his future.
c. Forewarning: He would not excel.
i. Unless his character was changed.
ii. His character would determine much of his future.
4. Rebuke of Reuben
a. He had forced the concubine Bilhah (Genesis 35:22).
b. In his arrogance he had treated her like a maid (she was the maid of Rachel).
c. But Bilhah was the mother of Naphtali and Dan.
d. Jacob’s regard for Reuben was badly affected by this incident.
Reuben must change or he would never excel. Solemn words of forewarning indeed!
