Text: Genesis 40: 1-4

MEDITATION

Genesis 40:1-4

1 It came to pass after these things that the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker.
3 So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Life in Egypt

a. It was ruled by a king.
b. He was called by his title “Pharaoh”.

2. People who served the Pharaoh

a. Guards or soldiers (Like Potiphar)
b. Court officials (administrators/ advisers)
c. Food and beverage
i. The butler (sometimes called “the cup-bearer”)
ii. The baker

3. Incurring the wrath of the Pharaoh

a. This was not an uncommon problem.
b. The Pharaoh answered to no one.
c. He was regarded like a god.
d. He could send anyone to jail.
e. He could even execute anyone.

4. The captain of the prison guard

a. He entrusted these two prisoners to the care of Joseph.
b. Joseph “served” them. He treated them with courtesy.

1 这事以后,埃及王的酒政和膳长得罪了他们的主埃及王。
2 法老就恼怒酒政和膳长这二臣,
3 把他们下在护卫长府内的监里,就是约瑟被囚的地方。

4 护卫长把他们交给约瑟,约瑟便伺候他们。他们有些日子在监里。

在生活里有意义地应用

1. 在埃及的生活

a. 由国王统治
b. “法老”是他的名衔

2. 服侍法老的人

a. 侍卫或士兵(像波提乏)
b. 宫廷官员(行政或顾问)
c. 饮食
i. 酒政 (偶尔也称为“倒酒的”)
ii. 膳长

3. 招致法老的愤怒

a. 这不是罕见的问题
b. 法老不须对任何人作交代
c. 他被视为一位神
d. 他可把任何人送入监里
e. 他甚至可把任何人处死

4. 监里的护卫长

a. 他把两个囚犯交给约瑟看护
