Text: Genesis 35: 27-29
MEDITATION
Genesis 35:27-29
27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.
28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Jacob’s visit
a. Jacob did not visit his father when he came back to Canaan.
b. He was not as close to his father as Esau was.
c. He finally visited his father in Hebron (the family home of Abraham and Isaac..
2. The death of Isaac
a. Isaac lived to 180 years.
i. He thought he would not live for so long (Genesis 27).
ii. He was already quite old and he was virtually blind.
iii. Thus, he had asked for a last meal from his son, Esau.
iv. That request triggered off a bad relationship between the brothers.
b. He breathed his last and died, possibly in the presence of Jacob and Esau.
i. Isaac lived to be a grandfather many times over.
ii. Jacob had twelve sons and none of them really got to know him.
3. The burial of Isaac
a. Esau and Jacob were there to give their father an honourable burial.
b. The brothers had already reconciled and thus the burial was done without any difficulties between the two brothers.
Death was a constant reminder of the fact that life on earth was transient. Life also included many moments of trials and sorrows!
