Text: Genesis 31: 31-32
MEDITATION
Genesis 31:31-32
31 Then Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.’
32 With whomever you find your gods, do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Jacob’s reply to Laban
a. He confessed that he had been afraid of what Laban could do.
b. He could have taken Jacob’s wives, who were his daughters, by force.
c. Hence, he made his escape from Laban’s country.
2. With reference to the gods of Laban
a. Jacob expressed utter confidence that Laban would not find his idols with him.
b. He did not believe in idols.
c. He worshipped the God of his father Abraham and Isaac.
d. A solemn word
i. Whoever had stolen Laban’s idols would be dealt with thoroughly.
ii. The thief would forfeit his life because of the theft of Laban’s idols.
e. Jacob was ignorant of an important fact.
i. Laban’s idols had been stolen.
ii. They had been stolen by Rachel, his favourite wife.
iii. If the idols were found in Rachel’s possession, her life would be forfeited.
3. A further offer
a. Laban could search as freely and as thoroughly as he liked.
b. Whatever was wrongfully taken would be seized and returned to Laban.
Jacob was confident that nothing of Laban’s would be found with him. He was no thief!

31雅各回答拉班说:“恐怕你把你的女儿从我夺去,所以我逃跑。32至于你的神像,你在谁那里搜出来,就不容谁存活。当着我们的众弟兄,你认一认,在我这里有什么东西是你的,就拿去。”原来雅各不知道拉结偷了那些神像。
