Text: Genesis 30: 34-36
MEDITATION
Genesis 30:34-36
34 And Laban said, “Oh, that it were according to your word!”
35 So he removed that day the male goats that were speckled and spotted, all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had some white in it, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36 Then he put three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Agreement reached
a. Laban listened to Jacob’s proposal.
b. He felt that it would be to his advantage.
c. It was more common for sheep to be white rather than speckled.
d. It was also more common for goats to be black rather than coloured.
2. Laban’s prompt response
a. He removed the speckled male and female goats.
b. The rest of the flocks (sheep and goats) were given to his own sons.
3. Keeping a clear distance from each other
a. Laban made sure that his flocks would be at least 3 days’ journey away from Jacob’s flocks.
i. He wanted to protect his flocks.
ii. He was not going to render any help to Jacob.
iii. Jacob would have to fend for himself.
b. He was probably feeling certain that he had “outsmarted” Jacob.
i. Laban had been in this business all his life.
ii. Jacob was a relatively “newcomer”.
c. Jacob still had to work for Laban at this point of time.
d. Jacob was unperturbed by the measures that Laban had taken.
