Text: Genesis 30: 12-13
MEDITATION
Genesis 30:12-13
12 And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.
13 Then Leah said, “I am happy, for the daughters will call me blessed.” So she called his name Asher.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The rivalry between Leah and Rachel continued
a. This rivalry was intense.
b. Both sides were equally determined.
c. They would stop at nothing to gain the upper hand.
2. Zilpah’s second son
a. Zilpah would once again conceive.
b. She bore another son.
3. The naming of the new-born
a. Leah expressed happiness.
b. She seemed to be winning this rivalry.
c. Another symbolic name was found.
d. Leah named the new addition: “Asher”.
e. It symbolized two things:
i. Asher could mean “happy”.
Leah was happy with this addition.
ii. Asher could also mean “blessed”.
Leah was conscious of what people were saying. They were remarking that she was indeed “blessed”.
HUMAN FAILINGS
1. That human failings existed in Jacob’s family cannot but be observed.
2. But all things were still within God’s sovereign plan! That plan would one day be revealed.
