MEDITATION
Genesis 30:7-8
7 And Rachel’s maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
8 Then Rachel said, “With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed.” So she called his name Naphtali.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Bilhah’s second son
a. She gave birth to a second son.
b. She too was productive.
2. Bilhah, the birth-mother
a. Bilhah was like a surrogate mother.
b. She knew her place.
c. She would be accorded some privileges, like being called a wife of Jacob.
d. But she knew the limitations.
3. The naming of the second son
a. Rachel named the second son also.
b. What she said may be noted:
i. She spoke of wrestling with her sister.
ii. Bilhah’s role was to be a mother to compete with Leah.
iii. It was likened to “a wrestling match”.
c. Naphthali was the symbolic name given:
i. Naphthali means “My wrestling”.
ii. Rachel was determined to prevail in this wrestling match with Leah.
JACOB
He could not interfere. He knew that this would create problems in the future in the family, but he did not have a solution to offer at all.
