Text: Genesis 30: 3-6
MEDITATION
Genesis 30:3-6
3 So she said, “Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, and she will bear a child on my knees, that I also may have children by her.”
4 Then she gave him Bilhah her maid as wife, and Jacob went in to her.
5 And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.
6 Then Rachel said, “God has judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Desperate to have children
a. Rachel wanted to have children desperately.
b. Perhaps she felt the scorn of her sister and society for being barren.
2. The offer of Bilhah, her maid
a. Rachel did what Sarah once offered to Abraham.
b. She wanted Jacob to marry her maid, Bilhah.
c. If Bilhah had children, they would be officially hers.
3. Jacob’s compliance
a. He accepted Bilhah as his third wife.
b. This was to please Rachel for he knew how much she wanted to have a child.
4. Bilhah’s conception
a. Bilhah soon conceived.
b. She bore a son.
5. The naming of this son
a. It was Rachel who gave the name.
b. This son of Bilhah was hers, biologically.
c. But officially, this son was Rachel’s. The name given was also symbolic.
d. The new son was called “Dan,” which meant “to judge.” God seemed to have judged in her favour.
