Text: Genesis 28: 1-2
MEDITATION
Genesis 28:1-2
1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: ‘You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
2 Arise, go to Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Isaac called for Jacob
a. Isaac’s love clearly and almost exclusively was for Esau.
b. Jacob was hardly in the picture.
c. This time round, Isaac spoke kindly to Jacob.
2. A charge given to Jacob
a. He must not marry a daughter of Canaan.
b. The marriage of Esau to two Hittite women brought much grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
3. Sent to Padan Aram
a. Abraham had sent a trusted servant to look for a wife for Isaac.
b. Isaac did not do this for Jacob.
c. Instead, he sent Jacob away to Padan Aram where Rebekah’s family lived.
4. Looking for a wife in Padan Aram
a. Hopefully, Jacob would be able to find a suitable wife from Rebekah’s family.
b. Jacob was not like Esau who was a hunter. He would have a hard time traveling.
5. What was lacking was obvious:
a. There was no provision for Jacob.
b. No horse, or donkey or a servant was given to assist him on this long journey.
c. Jacob was just sent away without much thought.
But Rebekah and Jacob were just relieved that Esau could not kill his twin brother now!
