Text: Genesis 23: 14-16
MEDITATION
Genesis 23:14-16
14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
15 “My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead.”
16 And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Ephron’s response to Abraham
a. He continued to be polite and respectful.
b. He was not offended by Abraham’s response.
c. He calculated the cost of the land of Machpelah.
d. It was worth 400 shekels of silver.
e. This amount was declared.
f. Ephron’s skill was noted.
g. He valued the friendship with Abraham and this sum of money was not to come between them.
2. Abraham’s swift response
a. Immediately, he weighed the 400 shekels of silver.
b. It would not do to procrastinate.
c. The full sum was paid to Ephron in front of all the sons of Heth (family of Ephron).
d. The purchase of the burial land for Sarah was now complete.
3. The complex social order of the Hittite
a. Abraham had learned how to be both humble and discerning.
b. He purchased the desired land of Machpelah to bury Sarah with dignity.
