Text: Genesis 23: 7-9
MEDITATION
Genesis 23:7-9
7 Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth.
8 And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me,
9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The art of speaking and negotiating
a. Abraham deserved to be called a “prince”.
b. He certainly displayed mastery in the art of speaking and negotiating.
2. Features that stood out
a. Bowing to the leaders of the land:
i. Respect is shown.
ii. Humility is also displayed.
b. Deference given to Ephron the son of Zohar.
i. Abraham was dealing with the Hittites who descended from Heth, a son of Ham.
ii. Ephron was recognized as a significant leader among the Hittites.
iii. Zohar was the father of Ephron.
c. Requesting help. The people who were friends of Abraham were asked to speak to Ephron on his behalf.
3. Request to purchase the cave of Machpelah
a. Abraham was prepared to pay the full price for this piece of land.
b. He did not take for granted the promise of land for burial offered earlier.
