Text: Genesis 21: 22-24
MEDITATION
Genesis 21:22-24
22 And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phichol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do.
23 Now therefore, swear to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt.”
24 And Abraham said, “I will swear.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Abimelech and Phicol
a. Abimelech was the king of Gerar (Genesis 20:1-2).
b. Abraham and Sarah had an encounter with him earlier.
c. Abimelech and his commander visited Abraham.
2. The remarks of king Abimelech to Abraham
a. He had made careful observation about Abraham.
b. He had already been told by God that Abraham was a prophet (Genesis 20:7).
c. God had been with Abraham in all that he did.
3. Asking for a commitment from Abraham
a. Abraham would not deal falsely with Abimelech.
b. Nor with his offspring (children).
c. Nor with his posterity (grandchildren and beyond..
d. As Abimelech had been kind to Abraham so he expected kindness.
4. Response of Abraham
He gave a promise to Abimelech with an oath that was binding. Abimelech had asked Abraham to swear that he would keep his word of promise.
