Text: Exodus 4: 24-26
MEDITATION
Exodus 4:24-26
24 And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the LORD met him and sought to kill him.
25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!”
26 So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood!”—because of the circumcision.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The word “encampment”:
a. In those days, there were “shelters” made for travellers.
b. They were common houses that would provide a place for resting.
c. The traveller has to look after his own meals.
2. Moses became seriously ill.
a. This was attributed as an act of God.
b. Zipporah understood what she needed to do.
i. Her son was not circumcised
(There were two sons. Only one son was mentioned. It is likely that this is a reference to the second son.)
ii. The rite of circumcision was part and parcel of the covenant given to Abraham (Genesis 17).
iii. She was a Midianite and did not fully understand and appreciate the rite of circumcision.
iv. Moses would have been the one to circumcise his second son.
(He must have circumcised the firstborn.)
v. But being seriously ill, he could not perform circumcision for the second son.
vi. Zipporah circumcised her son but she was angry that she had to do it.
vii. She scolded Moses because she was so upset about the circumcision. She could not fully understand this covenantal rite.
3. Moses recovered from his illness after his son was circumcised.
4. Zipporah returned to her father with her two sons.
This was not stated here. Moses sent her back with their two sons.
5. She returned to him after the children of Israel were delivered from Egypt (Exodus 18:1-6).
